Vegan Buffalo Jackfruit Sandwich

This is such an easy and delicious recipe when you are craving something with that spicy and tangy buffalo flavor. I really love jackfruit, it is so versatile and healthy! Although, I have not been able to find it near me (yet).  I have found it while traveling, but most recently I just ordered a 6 pack of canned Jackfruit from Amazon.


The core of this recipe is just 3 ingredients: jackfruit, hot sauce, and diced celery. I added in vegan sour cream for more creaminess and a tsp of turmeric for its healthy benefits. I decided to make a sandwich by using whole grain sprouted bread, a slice of vegan Chao cheese, and a sprinkling of celery leaves.

This would also be delicious in lettuce cups for a lighter snack, or even used as a dip. I actually took my buffalo jackfruit leftovers and stirred in mashed avocado, which resulted in a delicious dip!


The Process: 

First you will need to drain the can of jackfruit, and then squeeze the remaining water from the jackfruit pieces. I do this because there is salt added to the water, so I want to reduce the amount of sodium in my recipe. Jackfruit is pretty easy to shred with your fingers (or a fork), so I simply shred the pieces apart as I drop them into my pan.

Add a splash of olive oil and a splash of water, then allow the jackfruit to simmer for several minutes until it softens and continues to pull apart. After a few minutes, add in about 1/8 cup of Franks Hot Sauce and one tsp of turmeric. Allow this to continue simmering for several more minutes.

Once the jackfruit is all shredded and softened, add in the sour cream, and diced celery. Mix together and give it a minute to simmer together. Definitely taste the mixture at this point to make sure it has the flavor you are looking for. I found my mixture to be a bit too tangy, so I added a little coconut syrup to sweeten the jackfruit so the hot sauce wasn’t so overpowering.


There are a few easy ways you can tweak this recipe to meet your preferences: 

You could swap out the celery for diced green pepper or jalapenos. Instead of vegan sour cream, you could choose to use cream cheese, mayo, or mashed avocado instead.  You could also add in some shredded vegan cheese at the last minute if you want more cheesiness.



  • 1 Can of Jackfruit in water

  • 1/8 C of Franks Hot Sauce

  • 1 tsp Turmeric

  • 3 Tbsp Vegan Sour Cream

  • 3 stalks Diced Celery

  • 1 Tbsp Coconut Syrup (or any sweetener)
